Car Rental in Chile With No Deposit and No Credit Card

How to rent a car in Chile with no deposit and no credit card, how much more it costs in Santiago and Puerto Natales, and what is still on you.

Your flight landed in Santiago, the line at the counter moved and it is your turn. The agent asks for a credit card in the driver's name to hold the deposit, and that amount locks up a good part of the limit you had set aside for lodging, fuel and restaurants for the whole trip. Or worse: your card is a debit card, or it is in someone else's name, and the car you booked never leaves the lot.

Can you avoid this? In Chile, you can. Rentals with no deposit and no credit card exist, but they are rarer, cost more and do not take away your responsibility. Here is how to find them, how much they cost on the dates we searched and who they make sense for.

In short: On DiscoverCars, if you turn on the "No security deposit" and "No card required" filters, offers show up in Chile where you pay everything at booking and leave no deposit and no card at the counter. In January 2027, in Santiago, the cheapest offer of this kind cost about 56% more than the cheapest regular one. The damage deductible still applies, and fines, tolls and fuel are still on you.

How a no-deposit rental works

In a regular rental, the company holds an amount on your credit card at pick-up and only releases it after the return, if everything is fine. In no-deposit offers, that hold does not exist: you pay the whole rental at booking, and at the counter you do not need to show any card.

This works because DiscoverCars guarantees to the rental company that any charges owed will be paid. According to their help center, a charge spotted at the return is settled right there; if one comes up later, DiscoverCars contacts you to sort it out. The help center does not say which payment method is used for that later settlement.

How to find offers with no deposit and no credit card

The path is always the same, in any city:

  1. Search for the city and dates on DiscoverCars, entering Brazil as your country of residence.
  2. In the filter list, turn on "No security deposit".
  3. Also turn on "No card required". The two together are what guarantee the complete offer: no hold and no card at the counter.
  4. Open the offer and check, under "Rental conditions", the lines "Payment card required at pick-up" and "Security deposit at pick-up". In the ones we searched, they showed "No payment card required" and "R$ 0.00".

One detail: the official DiscoverCars page of no-deposit locations lists almost only Europe, Morocco and Qatar. South America does not appear there, but the offers exist in the search. Search for your city directly.

Where it exists in South America

Based on the numbers on DiscoverCars city pages on October 20, 2026, the supply is concentrated in Chile:

  • Santiago: 42 no-deposit offers.
  • Puerto Natales: 10, the base for Torres del Paine by car.
  • Puerto Montt: 7, the gateway to the Carretera Austral.
  • Argentina: almost nothing. Buenos Aires had 3 and Salta, 1. Mendoza, Bariloche and El Calafate, none.
  • Uruguay and Brazil: none in the cities we checked (Montevideo, Punta del Este, São Paulo, Florianópolis, Foz do Iguaçu and Fortaleza).

This number changes with the date and the season, so treat it as a snapshot of the moment, not as a rule.

How much more it costs: the real comparison

We ran the searches as a resident of Brazil, a driver between 30 and 65 years old. We did not book or test the service: the numbers below come from the research.

Santiago, January 11 to 18, 2027 (7 days, high season), search made on October 22, 2026:

  • 595 offers in total, 45 with both filters on.
  • Cheapest regular offer: R$ 559.09 (Hyundai Grand i10 or similar, downtown pick-up, average deposit on the credit card).
  • Cheapest with no deposit and no card: R$ 873.81 (Grand i10 or Suzuki Baleno manual, also downtown).
  • Difference: about 56% more, or around R$ 315 for the week.

Puerto Natales, same dates and same search:

  • 117 offers in total, 10 with both filters.
  • Cheapest regular offer: R$ 1,217.88. No deposit and no card: R$ 1,567.75.
  • Difference: about 29% more.

The difference swings a lot: in an October 21 search for Santiago, from October 23 to 31, the regular one cost R$ 497.97 and the no-deposit one R$ 1,088.94, more than double. Always compare on your own dates.

Can you cross into Argentina?

For those traveling as overlanders, this is the question that decides it. In the no-deposit offer we opened in Santiago (Suzuki Baleno automatic, R$ 916.34 for the week), the crossing was allowed, with conditions:

  • Only into Argentina. Other countries, no.
  • A fee of US$ 345.10 for the crossing.
  • Notice at least 10 days in advance and written authorization from the rental company.
  • Passport and driver's license sent before pick-up.

Each rental company has its own rule, so read that part of the offer before paying. The customs paperwork itself is the same as with your own car, and it is explained in how to cross the Andes by car between Argentina and Chile.

What is still your responsibility

No deposit does not mean no responsibility. In the Santiago offer, the included protection had a deductible of about R$ 5,030: if the car comes back damaged, you are liable up to that amount, with or without a deposit. Tolls, fines, fuel and cleaning are also still on you.

If you want peace of mind, you can add DiscoverCars Full Coverage, which covers the deductible and, in that case, settles the damage directly with the rental company. And always check the local conditions: minimum age (21 in the offers we saw), years holding a license, fuel policy and mileage. The documents the rental company asks for in Chile, including the International Driving Permit, are in our guide to renting a car in Chile, Argentina and Uruguay.

Who it is worth it for

The trade-off is simple: you pay more so you do not leave money locked up or depend on a credit card at the counter. It makes sense for those who:

  • only have a debit card, or do not have a credit card in their own name;
  • have a tight limit and prefer to use it on the trip, not tied up with the rental company;
  • are renting abroad for the first time and want to reach the counter without surprises.

If you have a credit card with plenty of limit, the regular offer is usually cheaper.

With a rental car every day counts, so arrive with your itinerary ready. In GT Overlander you describe the trip, such as "7 days starting from Puerto Natales with Torres del Paine", and the AI builds the route with the roads and the towns along the way. That way you know how many days you need before comparing offers in Santiago, Puerto Natales or Puerto Montt.

Frequently asked questions

How do you rent a car in Chile without a credit card?

Through DiscoverCars, by turning on the "No security deposit" and "No card required" filters in the search. The offers that show up are paid in full at booking and do not ask for a card or a deposit at pick-up.

Is renting a car with no deposit more expensive?

In our searches, yes. In January 2027 the difference was about 56% in Santiago and 29% in Puerto Natales; for late October in Santiago, it was more than double. Compare on your own dates.

If I crash the car with no deposit, who pays?

You do, up to the deductible amount, which in the offer we researched was about R$ 5,030. DiscoverCars Full Coverage can cover that deductible. Fines, tolls and fuel are always yours.

Can you rent a car with a debit card in Chile?

In the Santiago search for January, the "Debit card" filter started at the same price as the no-deposit offers (R$ 873.81), while the cheapest ones required a credit card. In practice, those who only have debit end up in the no-deposit offers, where payment is made in full at booking.

Wrapping up

The deposit is what scares people most when renting a car outside Brazil, and in Chile there is already a way around it. It is not the cheapest option, but it trades a little money for a lot of peace of mind at the counter.
