Internet on the Road: SIM, eSIM and Starlink for Overland Travel

How to get internet driving through South America: a strategy with a local SIM, an international eSIM and Starlink Roam for each scenario and country.

On an overland trip through South America, the internet has stopped being a convenience and become a logistics item. It's not just for posting a photo or working remotely, it's Maps deciding which road to take, it's WhatsApp letting the family know you made it through a difficult border, it's the banking app when the card jams at a gas station, it's the link to the inn you booked. Without reasonable internet, a long trip becomes riskier than it needs to be.

The good news is that digital coverage in the region has improved a lot in recent years. The bad news is that no single solution covers everything, each format (a local SIM, an eSIM, Starlink) serves a type of scenario, and whoever travels seriously usually combines two of the three. This article applies to whoever travels by car, motorcycle, van, motorhome or bicycle, what changes between them is the space for equipment, not the strategy.

In short: the three internet routes on an overland trip are: a local SIM (cheap, great coverage in a city, bad on a remote route), an international eSIM (activates in seconds without swapping a physical SIM, ideal for the first days in a new country), and Starlink Roam (expensive, but works anywhere with an open sky). The combination that works for most people: a local SIM plus Starlink for a long trip, or a local SIM plus an eSIM for a short trip.

How much internet you need, in practice

Before deciding anything, it's worth gauging the real usage:

Light use. Maps, WhatsApp, a banking app, posting a photo, reading the news. It works with 5-10 GB a month. Any local SIM handles it.

Medium use. The above plus video on YouTube/Netflix at night plus an occasional video call plus a photo backup to the cloud. 20-50 GB a month. A local SIM with a more robust plan or an eSIM with a bigger data allowance.

Heavy use. Remote work, a daily video meeting, uploading big files, intensive streaming. Starlink is justified here.

The rule of thumb: if your income depends on stable internet, you're heavy use and Starlink becomes an investment, not a luxury. If you only travel, a local SIM handles almost everything.

The local SIM, the base of almost any strategy

Buying a local operator's SIM at the border or in a mid-size city is, by far, the solution with the best value for urban coverage. It works very well in capitals, mid-size cities and main roads, especially the tourist ones.

Main operators by country (all ask for just a passport or ID, no bureaucracy):

Argentina: Movistar, Claro, Personal. Personal has the best coverage in Patagonia.

Chile: Entel, Movistar, WOM. Entel has the best general coverage.

Uruguay: Antel is practically a monopoly, excellent coverage.

Bolivia: Tigo, Entel, Viva. Tigo usually has the best signal in a small town.

Paraguay: Tigo, Claro, Personal. Good coverage on the main road, problematic in the deep interior.

Peru: Movistar, Claro, Entel. Movistar leads in Andean coverage.

Colombia: Claro, Movistar, Tigo. Strong coverage across the whole country.

What to ask for when you buy:

A plan with a generous data allowance, 20-40 GB usually covers a whole week without pinching.

Validity compatible with the trip, some plans last only 7 or 15 days.

Device compatibility, an unlocked Brazilian phone works in all these countries without a problem.

The real limitation of the local SIM: on a remote route (the deep Carretera Austral, the Salar de Uyuni, the ripio of deep Patagonia), the signal disappears for hours or days.

The international eSIM, the border bridge

An eSIM is a digital SIM. You buy it online before traveling, activate it in seconds on the phone without swapping anything physical. It doesn't replace the local SIM on a long trip, but it solves two specific problems very well:

The first days in a new country, before you manage to buy a local SIM.

Quick border crossings (a multi-country route of a few days).

Main options on the market: Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Yesim. Each one has plans by country or regional "South America" plans that cover several countries with a single SIM.

The price varies, but the order of magnitude: a regional plan of 10-15 GB with 30-day validity costs the equivalent of a few set-menu lunches. Expensive per gig compared to a local SIM, cheap for the convenience.

Prerequisite: the phone has to support eSIM (most smartphones from 2020 onward support it, but check before paying).

Starlink Roam, internet anywhere

Starlink changed the equation. Before, whoever worked on a remote route depended on perfect timing of the operator's signal. Today, with the Starlink Roam dish, you have internet anywhere with an open sky, it works for a viewpoint in Patagonia, the desert in Atacama, a riverbank in the Amazon, the depths of the Carretera Austral.

When it's worth the investment:

You work remotely and need stable internet.

You take a long trip (months) and a remote route is part of the plan.

There's more than one person in the vehicle who depends on internet.

When it's not worth it:

A short trip (one or two weeks).

A route only through big cities and main roads.

Light use (Maps plus WhatsApp).

Cost: the equipment is a significant investment (equivalent to a mid-range phone), and the Roam plan's monthly fee is the equivalent of a reasonable cable TV plan. The plan charges monthly and can be paused between trips.

Installation: the dish is big but light. It usually lives attached to the vehicle's rack during the trip, lying down when moving, standing when stopped. In a motorhome and a van, most people install it fixed to the roof.

How to combine them, the redundancy that works

Whoever travels seriously rarely depends on a single route. The combinations that work for most scenarios:

A short trip (up to 2 weeks), urban focus: an eSIM on the first day plus a local SIM at the border or in a big city. Low cost, zero stress.

A medium trip (1-2 months), a mix of city and route: a local SIM in each country you enter plus a regional eSIM as a backup. The eSIM covers the transition between local operators.

A long trip (3+ months) with remote work: a local SIM plus Starlink Roam. The local SIM handles the city cheaply, Starlink handles anywhere else. The two active guarantee that internet never drops completely.

The master rule: if a scheduled meeting exists, plan a stop that supports the meeting with room to spare. Internet can't be an improvisation when work depends on it.

FAQ

Does my Brazilian phone's SIM still work there?

It does, with the Brazilian operator's roaming plan. But it's expensive, slow and has a ridiculous data allowance. Almost no one uses it for a long trip, only for an emergency.

Can I use Starlink Roam while driving?

Technically the product supports "in motion" use on the specific plan, but most overlanders use it only when stopped. Driving with the dish standing is unstable.

And the satellite via a new phone (iPhone 14+ and similar)?

Today it works only for an emergency (SOS) and an occasional text message. It doesn't replace Starlink or a local SIM for real use.

Is Starlink worth it for a 15-day trip?

Usually not. The initial investment doesn't amortize over a short period. For a short trip needing internet on a remote route, renting Starlink (there are services that rent the equipment) makes more sense than buying it.

Can I share Starlink with another vehicle?

Yes, the Wi-Fi signal covers a reasonable radius. Common in a convoy: one dish for two or three vehicles parked close together.

To wrap up

Internet on an overland trip is less about technology and more about an honest gauging of real usage. Whoever recognizes that they need stable internet buys the right setup and travels calmly. Whoever ignores the topic leaves São Paulo thinking "WhatsApp will do" and finds out at the wrong time that it won't. The good news is that each of the three routes solves a well-defined piece, and the right combination for your type of trip is a short thing to decide, not a research marathon.
